This nine-session course will include boat terminology, required equipment, regulations, marine communications, boat handling, aids to navigation, rules of the road, emergency conditions and trailering. Also covered will be charts, the magnetic compass, plotting, and basic piloting techniques for use on open water such as Lake Michigan.

After completing one of the basic courses, you may wish to continue your boating education. There are two groups of courses available to members that add to the basic skills that are taught in the the Squadron Boating Course and the Boat Smart Course. The Advanced Grade courses are designed to cover boat handling in adverse conditions, differences in boat designs, charting, piloting, and navigation. We also offer a series of Elective Courses in marine electronics, cruise planning, engine maintenance, sailing, instructor training, and weather.
